Spring Fever!

I must apologize for my lack of posts lately, but I've been frantically creating new designs for the upcoming Glitterfest show! This will be my only "Spring-themed" show this year, so I'm really focusing on lots of bunnies, chicks and other spring favorites.

I generally put most of my attention to Halloween and Christmas designs, but this year the "Spring" bug bit me! I don't know what it was...our unusually warm Winter weather, or perhaps the new Martha Stewart pastel paints I purchased. Whatever it was, I'm thoroughly loving this spring-fever I've got!

Holy Toledo! Has it actually been a month and a half since my last post?!!! I honestly don't know where the time goes!

The weather has been beautiful here in California, it feels like Spring! So, I'm taking advantage of it and getting my Spring creations started. I've got lots of new bunnies and chicks lined up and ready for painting. I'm also working on several new submissions for my licensing company for Spring 2013.

You'll be seeing these new creations online and at my next show, Glitterfest, March 10th.

With the start of a new year, comes a whole new batch of ideas! I've got lots of new creations and surprises in store for you in 2012. Stay tuned!

Halloween and Vine - The Afterglow

It's amazing how something that you spend all year looking forward to can come and go in the blink of an eye. I spent many months preparing for Halloween and Vine, and in a few short glorious hours it was over. But how glorious those few hours were!

People lined up hours before the event. In fact, one of my collectors from San Diego was the FIRST in line at 5:01 am! (thanks Anne!). I was overwhelmed with the heartfelt praise and compliments I received from so many people who follow me on my blog and Facebook. It was so wonderful to finally be able to "put a face" to so many of my Facebook friends!

The first 60 minutes of the show were a blur. Honestly, the crowd in front of my table was several people deep! I consider myself so lucky to have such wonderful friends, fans and collectors - I have to keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming. I wanted to talk at length with each and every collector that purchased one of my creations, but the chaos of the morning made it too difficult to spend some quality time with everyone. I hope next time I can chat longer with everyone.

The show was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the Ginny and Christy (the show promoters) and also to the amazing artists who I was lucky enough to join. The level of professionalism at the show is top-notch and to be surrounded by such amazing artistry and creativity is truly inspiring. I'm already ramped up and ready for Halloween and Vine 2012!

The Samples are Here!

I just received my first look at sample prototypes from ESC Trading Co. that are being built from my original designs. At first glance, I had a tough time telling which was mine and which was the sample! I think that is a good sign that I choose the right company to reproduce my work. With just a few tweaks and adjustments, I will be ready to give my approval for reproduction.

The finished pieces will be created in a type of paper-pulp; this will help give the reproductions the same look and feel as my original construction. ESC Trading Co. is planning on offering 10 of my designs for their 2012 Spring collection.

Seeing these sample photos really helps makes this dream a reality. I think I can stop pinching myself now to see if I'm dreaming; all this pinching is making me black and blue!

I'm so thrilled to have my work represented in Art Doll Quarterly this month! When the publisher contacted me and asked me to write an article, I have to admit that a wave of fear washed over me. I don't consider myself a "writer" by any stretch of the imagination. When I expressed my concerns to the publisher, she assured me that writing about my work would be much easier than I could imagine. Truth is, it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. The trick was to image that I was speaking to a friend about my inspiration and process. Once I had that vision in mind, the article flowed effortlessly.

They always say when you're speaking in public you're supposed to imagine your audience naked...wonder if that trick works when you're writing as well ;)

I'm very grateful for ADQ giving me the chance to tell my story. Their reader base is upwards of 100,000 people! It's a little intimidating to image that many people will be reading my article. Even more difficult to image that many people naked!

Wednesday WIPs - Dem Bones, Dem Bones

Now that I'm back in the swing of "all things Halloween," I'm really focusing on skeletons...and lots of them! These boney fellows look a little bizarre without their bottom jaws. I always sculpt the jaw separately and attach it at the end - that way I can position it just the way I want to give them lots of personality.

I'm working on big skeletons, little skeletons, skinny skeletons and full-figured ones. A couple of these will make their way to ESC Trading Co. as part of my 2012 Halloween submissions.

I'm happy to announce that I recently signed-on with ESC Trading Co to license some of my original creations! This is something that I have wanted for a long time and I have to keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.

I have submitted designs for Spring of 2012 and I just received word that 7 of my designs will be picked up for reproduction. It is amazing to me to think that my designs will be in stores across the US, possibly even internationally! Now, if I could just get Tim Burton to "friend" me on Facebook, I could pitch him about making a movie together (hey, if I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream BIG!).

It boggles my mind that right now my designs are half-way around the world in China being prepared for sample reproduction. I pride myself on the fact that my designs are hand-sculpted and that each and every piece I make is a unique piece of art. This will not change. I will continue to make my one-of-a-kind creations for sale online and at art shows - in fact, I have more shows lined up this year than ever before! I feel that this licensing deal is a way to get my designs and name out to a much wider audience than I could have ever of done on my own. Luckily, the company gives me final say on all pieces that will be reproduced so that I can ensure that the quality will meet my standards.

Now that I've finished the Spring 2012 line, I'm already working on Fall 2012! Here is small sample of what I've got in store...

Wednesday WIPs (Works in Progress)

Far too often I forget that friends and fans want to see more about the process of what I do and not JUST the finished project. So each Wednesday I'm going to make an effort to let you see exactly what is going on in my studio - I'm calling it "Wednesday WIPs."

Here are some big "Trick or Treaters" in their "naked" stage. These poor fellows need a coat of paint! These are part of a collection - I can't reveal yet what they are for, but trust me, it's exciting news (I'll reveal soon!).

More "naked" creations, although at least the pumpkin has his skin (do pumpkins even have skin?).

This guy is almost complete! Just need a good coat of sealer, staining and then he is ready to find a good home.

Percy the Pumpkin

Tomorrow (3/31/11) is the latest release of the EHAG Emporium - an exclusive marketplace featuring one-of-a-kind Halloween creations. I will be offering my newest creation...Percy the Pumpkin. Sure, he looks a little scary, but honestly I think he is just misunderstood. All bark and no bite (well, maybe a nibble or two).

Percy is hand-sculpted from papier-maché. His arms were a real challenge for me. I knew that I wanted very thin and expressive hands, but papier-maché was just not going to work for me. I was afraid the medium wouldn't be durable enough and that the fingers could break off. I want my creations to last for years and years, so I knew I had to come up with a better solution. After playing around with lots of different materials, I discovered that heavy-gauge wire, wrapped, heavily decoupaged and covered in gesso gave me not only the expressive look I wanted but also amazing durability!

What A Difference Some Paint Makes!

I love this time of year. The hustle and bustle of the holidays are over and a new year is just around the bend. But by Christmas, my studio often looks like a craft store exploded...not a pretty sight! So to usher in the new year, I always like to start with a clean slate...or I should say a clean studio.

But this year, I wanted to do a little more than just scrape the papier-maché off the walls and scrub the paint from the floor. I wanted to make my work space more of a "creative space." My studio is not large, approximately 8 feet x 12 feet. I do have a much larger work area outside of this space that I do the real messy stuff in, but my primary space to create is my studio. The white walls and no-nonsense approach to my space were previously very utilitarian - it got the job done. But that's exactly what it was feeling like...a place to work, not a place to create. In a recent issue of Studio's magazine, some wonderful work spaces by some wonderful artists were showcased; Johanna Parker, Scott Smith, Dani Nelson...all featured amazing spaces that were not just a place to work, but a place to "create."

I realized after reading the magazine that my work area doesn't have to be all work and no play. Just adding some color to the walls could transform the space into something much more creative! And add color I did...orange, yellow and black! Since I love creating Halloween-inspired art all year, I felt the colors would perpetually keep the mood going. For me, painting the walls these colors was a step outside my comfort zone, but I can honestly say that I'm loving it! The space now feels like a creative sanctuary and not a utilitarian work room.

Now, if I can just get past the feeling that I need to keep it clean and pristine, maybe I can actually start getting some work done.

Wow! Has it really been a month since my last post?! I've been so busy with my Christmas shows and getting ready for the holidays myself that I find it tough to get everything done that needs to be done!

Thankfully, I managed to get two new characters finished just in time for the December update of Spookytime Jingles . Say hello to Jingles the Snow Angel and Petey the Party Pumpkin. Okay, so Petey is not really a new character, but a new version - standing atop a wooden block with vintage Halloween scenes decoupaged on the sides.

The Angels Have Arrived!

What a productive weekend I had! The stress of getting ready for the Harvest Festival is easing, ever so slightly. I've been so overwhelmed with the encouragement of my fans and friends. Thanks for all of the wonderful, positive comments on my blog and Facebook. Those comments really help to fuel the creative fire! You are all angels in my book!

And speaking of angels, I just finished up 6 for my upcoming show. New this year are angel tree toppers. I've also managed to get a couple "rolly-polly" angels completed as well. I really went out on a limb creativly and painted these in not-so-traditional Christmas colors. The mustard and green combination feels so good to me, I want to paint everything these colors... including my studio! The colors have an almost spring-time look to them. And what is so strange is that I generally don't gravitate towards pastel or tradional spring colors. I've learned that if the creative urge is there, don't fight it.

And REALLY venturing out of my comfort zone, I've been making some figures without eyes and my signature "big smile." They take on a much different look this way. Don't worry, I'm not giving up on those big teeth, it just feels good to let the creativity direct me down different paths sometimes.

Gentlemen, Start Your Brushes!

Holy Cow! Do I have a lot of painting ahead of me! My next show (Harvest Festival) is now 4 weeks away...and I've still got lots of work ahead of me. The good news is that I finished the last of my sculpting yesterday. All the figures are sanded and gesso'd. Now it's time to put the brush to the acrylics and paint like crazy!

I love the painting process. I think it goes way back to when I first started to learn ceramic painting in the late 70's. My mom and I took a class at a local ceramics store and learned all about dry brushing, antiquing, etc. Some of the techniques I still use to this day! There was something so magical about walking through the store and looking at all those unfinished pieces and just imaging the possibilties of what I could do with them. My biggest achievement at that time was painting an entire nativity set (including shepards, cows AND sheep). There was a total of 10 pieces in that set. Took me 4 months to finish.

Now, I look at the 50+ pieces I have in front of me to paint in less than 4 weeks, wishing I had the stamina I did back in 1979.

Okay, enough nostalgia...back to work!

A Great Day at the Village Venture

This past Saturday was my 8th year participating at the Village Venture - a wonderful arts and crafts show along the tree-lined streets of historic downtown Claremont, CA. The sky was gloomy and threatned rain all day, but the crafting gods were looking down on us and held back the mositure until 30 minutes after the show...what luck!

Set up started at 6:30 am. Who knew that the sun wasn't even up at that hour! I asked the show promoters for a new booth location this year as I had spent the last 7 years set up next to the Folk Music store's performance booth. The music is wonderful, but the sheer volume made it impossible to talk with customers. My new spot was centrally located right on a busy corner - perfect location!

The show officially opens at 9am - my first customer was there at 7am! She came early to watch me unpack and get first pick. That's dedication! Here she is making her decision...thanks Holly!

The gloomy weather really put people in the shopping mood. I had the single best sales day of any one-day show, ever! Thanks so much to Marty, Jeff and Wendy for helping me setup, teardown and wrap and bag all those sales. And a big thank you to all my friends, fans and collectors who came out to support me.

My BIGGEST Day of the Dead Creation EVER!

I just finished up my largest Day of the Dead figure so far to date. It may not look like it in this photo, but this fellow stands at over 13" high and is about 9" wide. I always like to make at least one LARGE piece for each show I attend; call it a "show stopper!" Something to really grab people's attention as they pass by my booth. The larger size also made it much easier to paint in all those intricate details on his face.

This bone-daddy makes his debut at the Claremont Village Venture, Sat. Oct 23rd. Hope to see you there!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

Halloween is still several weeks away, but I've put the orange and black paint away for now. It's about time I start working on holiday creations. I have to admit that a bit of melancholy comes over me when I know that the mad Halloween-rush is through. I still have one more Fall show to attend, but just about everything is completed for that show. Creatively, I find it tough to switch gears so abruptly, so I like to ease into it slowly. I may start by looking through some old Christmas catalogs, or books about Vintage collectibles. I remember as a kid, I found it easy to get into the holiday spirit when the Sears Wishbook would arrive in the Fall - does anyone else remember that? I know I'm really dating myself with that reference ;)

Somehow, this weekend I found the Christmas spirit and starting in-head first on some snowmen. Now I'm anxious to get working on those Santas, angels and gingerbreadmen.

And before you know it, I'll need to get out those pastel paints and start getting enthused about eggs and bunnies. Wow, where does the time go?!

Halloween and Vine - The Afterglow

As any artist who has ever worked a show will tell you, it can be an emotional roller coaster. The "fun" starts long before the show as you frantically try to get enough pieces made before the event. Then, as it approaches, you begin to question: do I have enough merchandise...do I have TOO much merchandise...are my prices too high...too low...will I even sell anything?

All those questions were answered, and I am happy to say that as an artist, my participation in Halloween and Vine was one of the best exhibiting experiences I have ever had.

More than 200 people were lined up before the doors opened at 9am. Some folks were there at 5:30 am!!!! Talk about determination! And believe me, these folks are determined! When the doors opened, the customers rushed past my table in search of their favorite artists; William Bezek, Nicol Sayer, Jack Roads.... It was like a feeding frenzy at many of these wonderful artist's tables. It was at least 10 minutes before anyone came to my table. And what a long 10 minutes that was. All those feelings of doubt kick in...I don't belong here...my work is just not good enough...maybe my stuff is just too "cute" for these collectors....

But then, it hit!!!! I had a customer, and then another, and then another. Before long, I had a line of people in front of my table holding 2 or 3 pieces each waiting to make their purchases! While I answered questions and made the sales, my partner Marty was frantically wrapping and bagging the purchases. For a solid hour and a half, everything was a blur of credit cards, receipts and bubble wrap! When the dust settled and I was finally able to take a breath, I realized that all those initial fears and doubts were unfounded.

Halloween and Vine is truly the quintessential collector's art show on the West Coast, and what an honor it was to be a part of it. The chance to show my work and the chance to meet some of my favorite artists (and exhibit amongst them!) was a dream come true.

I would like to thank all my collectors and friends who came out to see me. And a big thank you everyone who supported my art with your purchases and your words of encouragement. Just wait until you see what I have in store for Halloween and Vine 2011!

Skitzo the Zombie Clown!

I don't know why I've been so obsessed lately with making zombie clowns. I guess maybe because they scare the heck out of me and this is some kind of cathartic creative cleansing. Whatever the reason, here's my latest...I call him Skitzo! He is a dual sided piece...first I've ever made like him. One side...good and sweet clown. Other side...mean and nasty clown!

More Dia De Los Muertos!

I've been bitten by the Dia De Los Muertos bug! As I mentioned in an earlier post, I collect Day of the Dead art, and it wasn't until recently that I started making some myself. Now, I just don't want to stop making these colorful creations! They require a lot more detail painting than I normally do, but there is something quite zen about painting the decorations on the faces. In fact, I've found that I can get carried away with putting so much detail that none of the white skull shows through! Guess I need to learn restraint.

Return of the Candy Corns!

I had so many wonderful responses to my last posting of the Candy Corns in progress. I was thrilled to see that so many of you share my love of this iconic Halloween treat. So, I wanted to share the final finished corns with you. Here they are in all their sugar-filled goodness. I've made about 8 hanging corns and 3 standing ones. I will soon be packing them up for their road trip to Petaluma for the Halloween and Vine show (www.halloweenandvine.com).

One corn, however will be making his way over to the next Spookytime Jingles update on Sept. 13th (www.spookytimejingles.com). Which corn will it be? Stay tuned to find out!

Candy Corns

The ideas are coming fast and furious, but the clock is ticking away! My first fall show is only a month away and I can't keep up with all the things I want to make! This always seems to happen to me...when the pressure hits, the ideas come.

Today, I'm finishing up this batch of Candy Corns, and then it's onto sculpting one last batch of skulls (all my previous skulls that I had made for the shows have sold!). Right now, I'm looking at about 45 pieces that need to be painted in the next several weeks. So, please forgive me if my post start getting few and far between ;)

Halloween Night Lights

I just finished up these two new creations that I'm really excited about! Both stand about 16" high and have battery-operated tea lights in their pumpkin pails that give off a spooky, Halloween glow. Both are sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay.

I will be debuting these fellows at the Halloween and Vine show in just (GULP!) 7 weeks. 7 weeks?! Yipes! I better get back to work!

Dia De Los Chicken Lips

As a kid, I was petrified of skeletons, yet strangely drawn to them. As I grew, I started to find the humor in them. So when I discovered the tradition of Dia De Los Muertos art, I was hooked! I've been collecting pieces for quite a while now. And yet, I've never made a piece myself...until now.

Here is my first-ever Chicken Lips Dia de Los Muertos sculpt. I now really appreciate the detail that goes into painting a traditional skull! Lots of work! This fellow is hand sculpted from paper clay with a wire for hanging. I hope to make some more of these for some of my upcoming shows.

It's hard to believe it, but Spookytime Jingles turns 2 years old this month! STJ is an amazing marketplace of some of the finest creators of Halloween and Christmas art, and I've been lucky enough to be a part of the group since day one.

Skelly on the Move!

I seem to be fixated on the idea of things with wheels right now. I don't know why, but I want to put wheels on everything I'm making! This little skelly I just finished up is no exception. Riding in his eco-friendly pumpkin mobile, he is ready to cruise the graveyards. Sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay.

I'm finishing up painting my last batch of creations. Once these are painted, stained, waxed and sealed, then it's back to getting my hands in the clay and creating a whole new batch. I've got plans for witches, zombies, and maybe a Santa or snowman thrown in just to mix things up ;)

Wow, is it really 4th of July weekend already?! That means my first Fall show is under 3 months away...yipes! I've been so busy with Halloween creations that I almost forgot to create any patriotic art this year. But, just in time...here is Uncle Sam in his watermelon car.

Sam is hand sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay. His watermelon car rolls on wooden wheels. I was inspired to make this piece by a vintage postcard that I had found online. I've always loved the idea of traveling "by fruit!" And with it's low emissions, this method of transportation is definitely "green"...HA!

After a much needed vacation to Hawaii, I've put my nose back to the grindstone! Seems the wonderful warm weather we had while I was gone helped to dry a lot of the pieces that I had been working on. Now it's time for paint and Gesso.

I've got lots of seasonal goodies in the works including a couple new pieces that I'm really excited about; an Uncle Sam in a watermelon car and a skeleton in a pumpkin car! Hope to start painting these soon. Stay tuned.

Halloween is still a ways off. But for the last couple months I've been eating, sleeping and breathing Halloween! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it! It just kind of throws me off from the "real world" calendar. Heck, we haven't even had the Fourth of July yet and I'm surrounded by all things dark and spooky.

I've been working my tail off trying to make enough hanging ornaments for my upcoming shows. These little ornies have been so popular that I can never seem to make enough of them! Pumpkins are Coming!

Wow! Has it really been three weeks since my last post?! I'm so sorry for my absence. I've been busy mixing clay and getting initial forms and shapes built, so I haven't had anything fun and exciting to post. For some reason, the clay is not drying as fast as I would like right now. Must be a lot of humidity in the air. I stopped using my "drying closet" that I made a while back as it's costing a FORTUNE to run the dehumidifier and fan. So, I'm drying the clay the old fashioned way; with LOTS of patience ;)

I do have several new piece finished, including this Pumpkin Lantern. He's hand-sculpted from papier-maché and sits inside a tin pail. An electric tea light inside gives him a fun and spooky glow. It could even be used as a little candy dish! This fun fellow will make his debut on Spookytime Jingles, the May 13th at midnight. I'm only making two of these and the other will be sold at Halloween and Vine.

I just finished packing up my offerings for the Spookytime Jingles booth at the National Halloween Convention in Pennsylvania. Since pumpkins seem to be my biggest seller and such a crowd pleaser, I really focused on them. I've got tall pumpkins, short pumpkins, fat pumpkins and pumpkin candy containers...with a couple of skulls and devil thrown in for good measure ;)

EHAG Emporium Opens Tonight!!!!!

At 9pm (EST) tonight, the EHAG Emporium once again opens it's doors to reveal some of the best in original, Halloween art.

This month I'm offering "Harold the Halloween Bunny." I was actually inspired by Easter for this particular Halloween piece. I figured even an Easter bunny would get a little tired of chocolate eggs, jelly beans and pastels. Why shouldn't a bunny enjoy the fun and festivities of Halloween!

Harold is approx. 14" high and hand sculpted from papier-maché, painted in acrylics and oils. He is a truly one-of-a-kind piece and is going to go to the first collector that grabs him from the EHAG site. Hop on over and take him home today!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like....Halloween!

Halloween has begun to take over my studio, and I couldn't be happier! It feels so good to start sculpting pumpkins and skeletons and witches again. It's like being reunited with long lost friends; that is if your friends happen to be pumpkins and skeletons and witches ;)

My first batch of Halloween goodies are going all the way to Pennsylvania to the National Halloween Convention. Check out the web site (one of my pieces is even featured on the Home page!). Spookytime Jingles is going to have a huge display at the convention featuring many of the site's wonderful artists and Chicken Lips will be right there with them.

I SO wish I could go myself to this show! It is full of amazing decorations, special effects, props and some of the most God-awful frightening "Haunted Houses" in the world! This stuff is right up my alley. As a kid, I used to build "Haunted Houses" in my backyard. My parents and neighbors would indulge me by going through them (often times crawling on their hands and knees). Even with my limited budget of what I could afford to buy in the way of props at my local Five and Dime store, I still managed to scare the bejesus out of them! I can only image what I could do with some of the props and decorations available now. Take a look at the web site and see just how far we've come from plastic spiders and glow-in-the-dark paper skeletons!

Take a Gander at Betty!

It's time for the latest update of Spookytime Jingles! And this month I'm debuting Betty the Christmas Goose! Back when I used to sew (seems like a lifetime ago!), I used to make a stuffed goose that was a huge seller for me. The goose was my own pattern, based on my pet goose Betty (yes, I actually have a pet goose named Betty). After someone copied my design and began selling the goose as her own, I was disheartend and never sewed one again.

But now, Betty is back, this time as a papier-maché creation. This medium gives me the chance to really put personality and detail into her that I could never have achieved with cloth.

The End of Spring

Okay, I know Spring hasn't even officially begun, but for me it's over. By that, I mean that I'm finished with my Spring-themed creations for this year. It's time to get busy on Halloween! My bunnies have been a BIG hit this year (thank you to all who purchased them). So to say farewell to the season, I have two final furry friends that are looking for good homes. These will most likely be the last bunnies I make this year, so get them fast before they're gone!

Duck, Duck, Goose!

Before I jump full-force into making Halloween creations, I wanted to pay one last homage to Spring by creating some ducks and geese. For quite some time now I have had an idea to make a "summertime" duck - wearing a bathing suit and holding onto a "duckie" life preserver.

And, I've always wanted to make a Mother Goose..don't know why it's taken me so LONG to get to these ideas - better late than never I suppose. I've also got a Halloween Duck and Christmas Goose in the works as well!

It's official! Chicken Lips will be at the 2010 Halloween and Vine show in Petaluma, CA -Sept. 25! To be invited as an exhibiting artist to this prestigious show is a real honor.

The venue showcases the "best of the best" in Halloween folk art and to think that I will be selling right along side the "big boys and girls" of the industry just makes me giddy with excitement!

Sneak Peak

This Friday is the February update on Spookytime Jingles. It is also a Holiday Hootenanny, which means that many of the participating artists will be offering Easter-themed art as well as the usual Christmas and Halloween. Homer and the Angry Carrot

I'm always amazed where my ideas come from. Often times they seem to come from right out of the blue, completely without notice.

The other day I was talking on the phone and doodling on my workbench (which is always covered in butcher paper for just such an occasion). I subconsciously drew an angry carrot! I have no idea why. The conversation I was having had nothing to do with vegetables and I certainly wasn't in a foul mood. But whatever the reason, when the conversation was over I was looking down at a carrot with attitude! Well, that's all I needed to get the ball rolling on making my newest creation.

Meet "Homer and the Angry Carrot."

This duo is sculpted from papier-maché and paperclay. Painted in acrylics with oil paint details. This is the first of several bunnies I'm finishing up.

The Birds and the Bees

Spring is just around the corner, and I have two newly finished creations that honor the season! Both of these pieces celebrate Spring - and for those of you still suffering from the Winter blahs, I hope they brighten your day.

Bee Boy is hand-sculpted from Paperclay on a wood base. He's a big fellow, standing at over 16" high. He proudly holds his prized Honey Pot (removable).

Blue Bird is a new design. She is sculpted from Paperclay and sits atop a wooden box - ideal to store a trinket or two.

Both of these one-of-a-kind creations will be available exclusively on Arts a Flutter on February 1st.

Hippity Hoppity, Easter is on it's Way!

Cupid is Here!

Every year I try to make at least a couple Cupids to usher in Valentine's Day. This year, I've made both a standing cupid and a sitting one. Both are hand-sculpted from Paperclay, painted in acrylics and oils, and both have adorable rusty tin wings. One stands on a wooden base, while the other sits on a little wooden box. This is the first time I've made anything like this, and I'm really happy with the results! The box is a perfect way to store a couple trinkets or a few pieces of wrapped candy.Both cupids are currently looking for good homes and can be found exclusively at my ETSY shop.

Holiday Hootenany on Spookytime Jingles!

Starting tonight at Midnight (EST), the virtual doors will open on yet another month of Halloween and Christmas offerings from the many talented artists of Spookytime Jingles. But this month is something special - it's time for the annual Holiday Hootenany! Which means that many of the artists (including myself) will offer Valentine's-themed pieces. Here's a sneak peek at mine, titled "Cold Hands, Warm Heart." Unfortunatley, time has really snuck up on me and I will only be offering one Valentine's piece for this update. However, I have a couple of Cupids in the work right now which will done next week. Look for an update soon!

Cleaning - Phase 2!

I just finished the last of my January cleaning. And this was a BIG one! My workshop. Here is where I do all the "messy" stuff; mixing clay, sculpting, airbrushing...anything that makes a mess! It took a while to clean this up - you wouldn't believe the state that it was in. :(

I also made a new "drying closet" for my clay. Last year you may remember that I put a dehumidifier in a sectioned-out part of my studio. This worked great in drying the clay quicker and more thoroughly, except in the summer it made my work area almost unbearably hot! So, I've re-invented the drying closet by putting the dehumidifier on a wire rack shelf and surrounded it with a plastic shower curtain. This keeps the heat in and makes the dehumidifier more efficient. A preliminary test showed that it's going to work great! Kind of like a big dehydrator. Hey, maybe I can start making jerky!

With all the cleaning complete, it's time to get to work. I've already started on a couple Cupids for valentines and some Springtime bunnines will soon be hopping by!

Out with the Old - in with the New!

I love this time of year - the week between Christmas and New Year's. It gives me a chance to clean my studio and workshop before I start working on new creations for 2010. There is something so optimistic about a newly cleaned work area. It seems like the possibilities for creativity are endless - kind of like looking a blank sheet of paper. The dust is all removed, the workbench is freshly papered, newly purchased paints are still sealed...I kind of hate to mess it all up again :(
Oh well, ya gotta break a few eggs to make a cake...or rather, ya gotta spill some paint and make some mess to make a Chicken Lips!

I just wanted to tell each and every one of you how much I have appreciated your support and friendship this year! Chicken Lips exists because of the amazing fans and collectors that continue to support my art and help fuel my creativity.

Next week I plan to clean my workshop and studio - the mad rush in getting ready for the last show has left everything looking like a battle zone! Once I get everything cleaned up and back in it's place, I'll start creating new pieces. Just wait until you see what I have in store for 2010!

Harvest Festival a SUCCESS!!!!!

Despite the lackluster economy, the Harvest Festival was a HUGE success for me! In fact, I had the best sales of ANY show I've ever worked! I'm still coming down off the excitement and high!

I can't even begin to tell you what a thrill it was to receive such wonderful praise and compliments for those who stopped by my booth! The comment I most often heard was... "your work just makes me smile!" As an artist, a comment like that is true validation. It is important for me to know that my art is connecting with an audience. Online sales are wonderful and are a great indicator that I'm doing something right, but there is nothing like seeing firsthand the reaction that my art evokes.

I'm so happy to be able to share my vision through my creations and am so thankful for the wonderful friends and collectors that keep coming back for more.

I cannot believe how FAST this year has gone by! It's already December - and that means it's time for the Harvest Festival. This is the big, 3 day show that I've been frantically working towards for the last 6 months!

If you are in the So. Cal area, come on down to the Harvest Festival this weekend, Dec 4-6. There are hundreds of artists from across the United States represented at the show. There's lots of food, entertainment, and of course...Chicken Lips!

I've got LOTS of new Holiday items made exclusively for the show; angels, snowmen, Santas, and much more! But get there early, for the best selection. Last year, I almost sold out by the 3rd day of the show!

I've had a lot of requests from customers to restock my ETSY shop. I'm so sorry that it has been so depleted for so long! What with the efforts of building enough stock for the Harvest Festival and getting knocked down by the nasty Swine flu, I just haven't had a chance to "restock the shelves." Slow Down!

Sometimes when you least expect it, something comes along and tells you to "SLOW DOWN." That messenger came to me last week in the form of Swine Flu! Why it had to hit at quite possibly the WORST time of the year is beyond me. At a time when I was already stressed and wondering how in the world I was gonna get everything done in time for my next show, H1N1 told me to stop and smell the Tamiflu. After a week of laying on the couch and watching Oprah, Ellen and The View, I'm ready to get back at!
I've managed to finish up a couple pieces today. The Santa and Snowman candy dish is a whopper in size. Over 2 feet tall, the Santa is removeable to reveal a place for candy. I've also finished up this Santa bust. A new design, he was really fun to make and I have plans (next year!) to make some angel and snowmen ones.

Hopefully, the worst of this darn flu is over and I can start posting more pieces in the next two weeks before my show! One can only take so much of daytime TV...UGH!

Where Does the Time Go?!!!!

Oh my gosh! Has it really been over two weeks since my last post?! I hang my head in shame :(

I've been SO busy getting ready for my next show - Harvest Festival - it seems there are just not enough hours in the day to get everything done! I have been up to my earlobes in Santas, elves, angels and snowmen. Here's a shot of some recently finished snowmen - big ones, small ones, skinny ones and fat ones!Besides getting ready for my next show, I've also been making a few new creations for the next update of Spookytime Jingles (tomorrow at midnight). Here's a couple of my new offerings...I promise as soon as I can catch my breath, I will be posting some more WIPS and (if I'm lucky) some actual finished pieces!

Chicken Lips at the Claremont Village Venture

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning and there's a chill in the air. It's Fall! And that means it's time for the The Claremont Village Venture. Chicken Lips will be there with all new Halloween creations! Some sweet and some spooky!

If you are in the Southern California area, The Claremont Village Venture, is a wonderful way to welcome in the Fall. The tree-lined streets of historic Claremont are turned into an amazing arts and crafts festival with over 450 artists. And with LOTS of tempting food treats AND free admission, it's a wonderful way to spend the day.

Stop by and see me - Booth #275. But be sure to get there early for the best selection! Many collectors are there even before the show officially opens at 9am. In fact, last year I was selling merchandise AS I was setting it up for display!

My latest piece - "Kitty in the Box" - sold in record time (thanks Wendy)! This "Pumpkin in the Box" is available in my ETSY shop and will most likely be the last Halloween piece that I will be offering for this season.

The Village Venture is next weekend, and I'm just finishing up my latest creations. I hope to get some photos uploaded of all my new spooky Halloween goodies (soon, I hope!).

Honestly, I feel like time is slipping through my fingers! I can't seem to get everything done that needs to be done for my upcoming shows, much less find time to keep up with my blog. I do apologize for the lack of posts and promise I will rectify that soon! I've got LOTS of new creations that I'm anxious to share with you!

"Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful..."

Okay, maybe "frightful" is not the right word, after all, it is still 90˚ - although that is pretty frightful if you are a snowman! And that's just what I've been up to...making snowmen - and lots of them! I just finished putting a coat of Gesso on 11 new snowmen creations. Big ones, small ones, short ones and tall ones!

I love making these frosty fellows, they have lots of personality and just seem to really embody the holiday spirit. These newest creations will be available at my upcoming shows. Check my web site to find the dates of a show near you!

Lil' Devil

When I made my first devil a couple years ago, I thought "who would even buy this?" I grew up in a household where "the devil" was something you feared and dare not speak his name. But it was that taboo that made the idea of a guy in a red suit (or is that his skin?) and a pitch fork all the more interesting. I've actually had a customer at show comment that it was wrong to glorify "the devil." The fellows I make do not represent the ambassador of evil, but more of a playful, mischievous side that I believe is in every one of us.

Here's a peak at my latest mischief maker - and most likely the last I will have time to make for this season. He's a rolly polly fellow, approx. 11" high. Hand-sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay. With that grin on his face, you just know he's up to no good!

Christmas...in September!

Sorry that I've been MIA lately. I've been frantically working on getting ready for my two Fall shows...oh, and I did take a few days off to go to Las Vegas - but honestly, I thought about work the whole time ;)

I've just finished up the last of my Halloween creations for this year. Now I'm jumping into Christmas! Seems kind of strange to be making snowmen in 105˚ heat! And, the humidity is SO low that the clay is drying as I mold it!

Here are a couple quick shots of new Christmas WIPS; the first is a Santa bust, the second is a Santa in a Snowman. Santa lifts out to reveal a place for candy. This is a big piece! Stands about 2ft. high!

This coming weekend is the Halloween & Vine event in Northern CA. I want to wish all my friends who will be participating a "good show" and lots of sales!

Clarabelle the Chicken

My friend Robert (Halloween Fanatic) recently suggested I make a Halloween chicken. What a great idea, and a no-brainer considering my love for all things "chicken." Once I had the suggestion, it was no effort to sketch something out - using one of my own chickens (Clarabelle) on my "ranch," the idea came to life!

She is sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay. Clarabelle is looking for a good home and can be purchased from my ETSY shop.

Tomorrow night at midnight will be the release of the new issue of SpookyTime Jingles! I have several exclusive creations that I will be offering on a first-come first-served basis! Meet Beauford T. Bones

I've always wanted to make a skeleton farmer and have finally gotten around to making it happen. Say hello to Beauford T. Bones! This boney fellow and his skeleton chicken are sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay on a wooden base.

I collect Dia De Los Muertos skeletons myself and wanted to create a few skeletons that could be displayed all year-round, not just at Halloween.

Beauford will make his debut at The Claremont Village Venture on Oct. 24th.

I'm working my fingers to the bone getting ready for upcoming shows, so please forgive me if my posts seem few and far between! I will keep you updated with some sneak peaks of what is coming out of my studio!

Candy Dish WIP

Here's a peak at a WIP that is in it's final stages of drying. This candy dish is one of the largest I've ever made. Based on the photo, it doesn't look that big, but this huge piece stands over 2 ft. high! Sculpted from papier-maché and paper clay, it's a sturdy piece! The kitty sits in the pumpkin - which servers as a lid to the container.

I hope to get at least one more of these made for my upcoming Fall shows. I also have plans to made a snowman head with a Santa inside. So many ideas....so little time!!!!

New Creations on Arts A Flutter

Wow!!!! Is it September already?! Where did the summer go. I've been locked up in my studio for so long preparing for my Fall shows that time has just slipped by! I got LOTS of new Halloween creations finished and will be posting them over the next few days.

Now that it's the first of the month (well, technically tomorrow), that means its time for a new update on Arts a Flutter. This month I'm offering two rolly polly Halloween characters. Both the pumpkin and devil are hand sculpted from paper maché and paper clay. I'm loving using paper maché for the base as it gives the pieces lots of weight and substance. Sculpting the heads and details in paper clay gives me more creative freedom.

Veggie Guy

I have always loved vintage "Veggie people." A traditional German Halloween icon, these rolly polly fellows always make me smile. A lot of wonderful artists I know make characters in this vintage style (Lori Rudolph and Jorge Rojas to name a couple). I thought it high time I gave one a try - with the Chicken Lips spin to it, of course!

The wonderful thing about these guys is that their look lends itself perfect to my big toothy grins! I constructed this fellow with a Fast Maché base to give him weight and substance. I sculpted his head and arms in Paper Clay, which gives me more control for shaping and sculpting. He is painted in acrylic washes, airbrushed, stained, given oil paint details and then sealed.
I also made a hanging ornament, just for fun!

I've made 4 veggie guys for the Fall season; two are going to my Fall show but the other two are up for grabs on my ETSY shop.

The Skeletons Are Here!

Seems like my postings lately have been so much on the "WIP side." That's why it's very satisfying to be able to post work that has actually been completed!!!! Last month I sculpted 8 skeletons, here are a few of the finished bone daddies. I still have a couple yet to paint - including the "Farmer" skeleton and his chicken (I'm saving that for last!).

Skeletons in my Closet!

I've taken the last few days off to recharge my batteries, but now I'm back at it...full steam ahead!

I've managed to get a whole bunch of skeletons sculpted and they are basking comfortably in my drying closet. I've got dapper skeletons, scary skeletons, clown skeletons...even a farmer skeleton with a skeleton chicken!

I LOVE skeletons. Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by them. They used to fascinate and yet scare me at the same time. Even as an adult, one of the few things I collect are Dia De Los Muertos skeletons. They are such wonderful, universal symbols that we can all relate to on one level or another. They are certainly something that all us of have in common...connects us all, if you'll pardon the pun! No bones about it!

Snowmen in July!

I'll do anything to beat the heat right now! Including making snowmen ornaments! Somehow making these frosty fellows cools me down. This snowball guy is made from a combination of Fast Maché and Paperclay. I've found that I LOVE Fast Maché for the heads, bodies and larger forms I create. But, I still turn to Paperclay for the details. I'm finding this combination truly fun to work with and it gets my creativity moving in overdrive.

Chicken Lips Workout

I discovered this weekend that I can get a LOT more paper maché mixed if I'm hopped-up on Starbucks and dancing to Britney Spears! The downside is, with all this mixing I'm starting to get Popeye forearms! Now, if I could just figure out a way to mix the paper maché with my legs, I could get a full body workout!

I'm up to my hips in Chicken Lips WIPS...should be posting more for you to see soon!

Busy Busy Busy!

Seems like the closer we get to Fall, the faster I work! My productivity really kicks into overdrive when I think about the two big Fall shows coming up that I will be participating in. I suspect it's that "Fight or Flight" thing. Despite the scorching heat, I've managed to get about 20 pieces built in the last week. Actually, I think the heat is helping to dry the clay faster. My walk-in Kiln I built is really working well with this weather. Honestly, when I walk in, the heat and the dehumidifier are working so well together that I almost can't even blink....there is NO moisture to be found! Bad for the eyes, good for the clay!

I'm trying to finish up as many Halloween pieces as I can before I really jump into the Christmas spirit - and considering it's 101˚ in the shade, It's kinda hard to think of Jolly old saint nick when the sweat is rolling down your back."Visions of sugar plums" turns more into "visions of Mojitos!" Anything to beat the heat and keep the creativity flowing.

Despite the weather, I've got lots of ideas for new pieces! I'm really into making owls right now! My friend Robert (Halloween Fanatic) created a monster when he challenged me to design an Owl. Now I can't stop making them!

I've also got plans for stacked pumpkins, devils, Halloween kitties, and so much more!

Now, excuse me while I get back to getting the Mojitos...um, I mean creativity flowing.

It's hard to believe, but SpookyTimeJingles turns 1 year old this month! I'm proud to have been one of the original members of this site from the start.

Sneak Beak Peak!

Here's a sneak peak at a new design I'm working on. My friend Robert (Halloween Fanatic) suggested I make an owl candy dish. Always being up for a challange, I decided to take it on! I wasn't quite sure how I was going to construct it, but somehow inspiration took over (thank Heaven's for inspiration!) and here is the result so far. Hope to have the base coat painted this weekend as well as finishing up a whole bunch of pumpkins, devils, witches and assorted things that go bump in the night!
